Service Description

Learn pins, forks, double attacks, and checkmating moves! Play for trophies in the class championship! Learn thinking skills that help in school and in sports! Everyone can win a trophy by participating in class. Our teachers, Gauri and Arjun Manoj, are among the highest-ranked chess professionals in the nation and have coached numerous children to state and national recognition. The brothers are Glenview residents and Glenbrook South High School alumni. PARENTS: Why chess? Chess strengthens children’s brains for math, science, and creative thinking—while they think they’re just playing a game. Chess teaches rational decision-making and empowers children to take ownership of their choices. It is one of the best activities for building executive-functioning skills—the ability to control impulses, make plans, and stay focused. According to Dr. Bill Hudenko, child psychologist and professor at Dartmouth, “playing chess necessitates the successful use of problem solving, planning, and reasoning skills that are the hallmark of healthy executive functioning.” These problem-solving skills are the basis of all learning and are key to success in school and the workplace. Dr. Hudenko also encourages parents to play chess with their children at home! Adding chess at school and at home is a fun, playful way to prepare children for success in academics and life. Kids will be awarded with various-sized trophies based on points earned through playing games at home, solving puzzles, and tournament play in class. We reward hard work! With your help, your child can reap the vast benefits chess has to offer! - - - - - - - - - - - Henking Fall/Winter 2025 ----------------------------- 3:40-4:40pm Wednesdays: September 10 to January 14: $320 Class runs every Wednesday that school is in session
